Medicare Supplements

Medigap Insurance

A Medigap policy, also known as a Medicare Supplement policy, is a private health insurance plan designed to cover the gaps in Original Medicare coverage. Some Medigap plans share in a portion of the costs not covered by Medicare, other more expensive options can cover nearly all expenses not covered by Medicare.

Every Medigap policy must comply with strict Federal and state laws designed to protect consumers. In most states, the Medigap Policies are identified by the letters A through N. Several states, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin are plans that are similar, but standardized in a slightly different way.

In order to be eligible for a Medigap policy, you must be covered (or have signed up for) Parts A and B of original Medicare. A Medigap policy is different than a Medicare Advantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO) because those plans are ways to get Medicare benefits plus a supplement in one package. While convenient, they do limit the number of providers that you may see, and you will likely need referrals for care. Please choose that model that suits your personal medical insurance needs.
